There are a lot of Americans with hearing problems and unfortunately there are many of them who go without hearing aids. The reason all these people go without help for their hearing problem is mostly because of the cost.
Most people with hearing loss get it by getting older. Two out of three people over 70 have trouble hearing. But what’s surprising is how many of them don’t get hearing aids. According to the latest data, only about 20 percent of adults who suffer from hearing loss use a hearing aid.
In the United States, the average cost to get a pair of hearing aids is around $4,700 which is expensive to most Americans. For the average American, this could be their third largest material purchase in life after a house and a car. To add to the problem, the majority of insurance companies don’t cover hearing aids.
Aside from cost, there a re a lot of people who are just too embarrassed to wear a hearing aid. And some people are put off by the hassle of getting them. In the U.S., you can’t get hearing aids without testing and consultation with a doctor or audiologist.
But there may be help on the way for all those people with hearing problems. The problem is that hearing aids treat all forms of hearing loss and most people only suffer from mild hearing loss. One of the biggest problems people with hearing loss complain about is just being able to understand what’s being said.
A new law will create a new class of hearing aids much less customized, but also much less expensive. They may resemble these devices, called personal sound amplification products, or PSAPs.
These PSAPs will provide a variety of features at a significantly reduced price. Some starting as low as $80. the world of hearing aids is about to improve dramatically, both at the expensive end, and – thanks to that new law – over-the-counter.
