Baking soda is found in almost every kitchen. As the name implies it is mainly used in baking. But people also use baking soda for many other things such as a cleanser and even to whiten teeth. And now it is becoming popular as a health additive. Half a teaspoon of baking soda is taken to ease heart burn or acid reflux. There are still more benefits to baking soda that are being researched.
In a recent study that has been published in “The Journal of Immunology”, researchers from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University had some interesting findings. Their research revealed that drinking a solution of baking soda could prime the immune system against inflammatory disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
In experiments first used on rats they tested the effects that drinking a baking soda solution would have on them, then the tests were conducted on human’s. The experiments revealed that baking soda provides a signal to a special type of cell called “mesothelial calls”, these cells let the body know that everything is fine and that the body is not under attack which in turn renders an aggressive immune system unnecessary. This helps prevent harmful autoimmune responses.
Among other things, baking soda prompts the stomach to produce more gastric acid, which helps it to digest food quicker and with more ease.
Because the same types of cells are found in the blood and kidneys, baking soda is also used in the treatment of chronic kidney disease. Researchers are also studying the mechanisms through which baking soda might help improve renal function.
As lab rat and human tests have revealed that baking soda could influence the inflammatory response at a cellular level.
The attributes of simple baking soda continue to amaze researchers and there seems to be no end to what new directions this research may lead.
